How often can I expect to have an ARCP?
Each trainee must have at least one ARCP per calendar year. This includes those who are training less than full time. 
Trainees will have an additional ARCP following an outcome 2, 3 or 10.2.
Occasionally, a trainee may be invited for an interim review e.g. preceding OOPE.
Trainees will be given 12 weeks' notice of their ARCP date, to allow time to gather evidence, complete the ESSR and submit all documentary evidence to the LLP.
The final ARCP, when a trainee is approaching the end of their training scheme, MUST occur within 3 months of their completion date.
Will I be invited to attend my ARCP?
ARCPs are now conducted remotely via Microsoft Teams and trainee attendance is no longer required.
Trainees who receive a developmental outcome (2, 3, 10.1, 10.2 or 4) will have the outcome confirmed by Programme Support and a panel member, usually their TPD, will contact them soon after to arrange a feedback meeting. 
 
I am OOP, LTFT, an Academic or dual trainee. What about me?
OOP (out-of-programme)  An annual ARCP is expected for trainees whether in or out of Programme. Further information of the ARCP process for these trainees are detailed in the Gold Guide. The outcome for an OOP ARCP differs dependent on the type of OOP (E, R, T).
LTFT (Less than Full Time) Trainees will have an ARCP every calendar year even though they may not have completed an entire year's worth of training.
Academic trainees will also require an annual ARCP. The ARCP panel will include representatives from both the Clinical and Academic programmes, and the trainee must progress in both their Academic and their Clinical programmes in order to proceed.
Dual Trainees will have an ARCP in both specialties (for Anaesthetic/ICM duals these will generally completed by the same panel). 
Trainees cannot progress in one CCT if they are on a developmental outcome in the other. For example, a trainee who is struggling with the Final FRCA will not be able to progress to Stage 2 of ICM training even though they have completed their Stage 1 ICM requirements.
 
What can I do in the event of a concern about an outcome?

A trainee may request a review of an Outcome 2, or appeal an Outcome 3 or 4. There are time limits and requirements for embarking on these processes; details, appeal deadlines and links will be included in the notification email sent via Programme Support (within 24 hours of the ARCP taking place).

What are the reasons for which an Outcome 5 may be issued?
ARCP outcome 5s may arise for two distinct reasons.
 
Firstly, a trainee may be issued an Outcome 5 because they have an outstanding module to complete before they progress to the next level of training and they are still undertaking that module at the time of the ARCP. This can be frustrating for the trainee who has everything else in order for their assessment. It may be possible to issue an Outcome 1 in this circumstance provided that the module supervisor (perhaps via the ES report) indicates that the trainee is progressing satisfactorily in the module and is expected to complete it in a timely manner. However, if this is not clear in the ESSR then the panel will have no choice but to issue an Outcome 5 pending completion of the module. In this circumstance, the Outcome 5 does not reflect poorly on the trainee who is otherwise well-prepared for the ARCP.
 
Much more commonly, a trainee receives an outcome 5 because the they have not presented sufficient evidence to the panel for an assessment to be made, or if a trainee has not submitted a Form R (Part B). This situation should be entirely avoidable if the trainee maintains their portfolio and prepares in a timely manner, meeting their ES and using the ARCP checklist. An Outcome 5 in this circumstance reflects poorly on the trainee. 
What should I do if my ES is on leave around the time of the ARCP?
Firstly, try to avoid this circumstance by making sure you know when your ARCP is likely to take place and planning a suitable review time with your ES well in advance. Remember, your ES may supervise several trainees and will not always know that your ARCP is coming up. 
 
All documentary evidence for the ARCP should be completed at least two weeks prior to the ARCP date, and your ESSR should be submitted around three weeks ahead. Adhering to this schedule will minimise the chances of missing your ES at a crucial time. Should you find yourself in this circumstance then please seek advice from your College Tutor or TPD ahead of the ARCP.
How does the ARCP panel review my evidence?

The panel members will be given access to your ARCP record about one week prior to the assessment day. They can only review evidence that is linked to an ARCP record and cannot see historical evidence relating to previous levels of training. It is therefore essential that you link all your evidence appropriately, complete the ESSR in full and include the ARCP checklist annotated to show how your evidence can be viewed.

Most issues can be managed easily in advance but, if left until the ARCP day, may result in an developemental outcome or extension to training.
