Foundation Priority Programmes (FPP)

Foundation Priority Programmes (FPP) have been developed to support specific areas of the UK that have historically found it difficult to attract and retain trainees through the foundation and specialty recruitment processes. The main aim is to maximise the opportunity for applicants who wish to be located in less popular areas and therefore improve supply for specialty training and beyond. These programmes also often offer a range of incentives, such as additional educational opportunities, digital innovation, international experience, financial incentives, leadership, medical education and enhanced exposure in certain specialties for example.

As part of this process, applicants will have the opportunity to rank individual priority programmes that have been determined by a specific location, as part of the application form and prior to national allocation to FP. Successful applicants will be offered specific programmes prior to national allocation to foundation schools.

Once you have been nominated and have registered on Oriel, or deemed eligible by the UKFPO’s Eligibility Office, you will need to search for and apply to the Foundation Programme (FP) vacancy.

You should then search for and apply to the national vacancy for Foundation Priority Programmes (FPP). Applicants will be asked to rank programmes as part of the application form. You should rank only the programmes you wish to be considered for, i.e. those in a particular region. Programmes you would not accept should be listed in the ‘not wanted’ column.

Any applicant who has applied to FP can apply for FPP, i.e. all nominated or eligible applicants.

Applicants will be ranked based on the total application score for FP (EPM + SJT).

Generalism Posts

The 2021 UK Chief Medical Officer's report confirmed the importance of enhancing generalist skills in managing complex multi-morbidity and reducing health inequalities. The Health Disparities White Paper will confirm the intention of including such skills teaching for all Foundation doctors, with additional training at a deeper level for those doctors with a demonstrable interest in generalist care. These posts will allow such doctors to experience an immersive, multi-professional generalist skills training programme alongside their standard placements, and hopefully improve retention within the local area where this programme is active amongst health and social care teams.

In FY1, trainees will have a 1/2 day release per week to undertake the multi-professional Enhance programme within the Humber region, and to undertake a funded Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Practice, Management and Education. In FY2 the trainees will continue with the day release programme, but be embedded in a community or other generalist placement (such as GP, public health, palliative care etc.) to apply these generalist principles to practice.

Entrepreneurship Posts

Please Note: These posts have been postponed until August 2024 as we are still arranging the programme details

The modern NHS needs enhanced links with business and individuals who are both dual trained in medicine and business innovation, especially in our modern digital age. Locally our undergraduate schools are pioneering entrepreneurship programmes that will deliver this type of trainee at an undergraduate level. There needs to be an opportunity for these individuals to continue to develop their skills during foundation training. These programmes will provide this, allow local retention, and hopefully will feed NIHR posts that are being developed. It will also provide an opportunity to attract individuals who have developed business acumen outside their undergraduate training who want to develop this. We hope that providing a sequential training model will improve local retention but also prevent these individuals being lost for the NHS.

Trainees will have a day release, on a weekly basis to local business or business schools in the local University to continue to develop approved NHS business improvement/innovation or development. This would be similar to the LIFT model. They will have a supervisor from the local University business school or other suitable department depending on their business skills and interests.

SIM Posts

Simulation remains an important part of the Foundation curriculum and this was reinforced during the Foundation review process of 2019. In FY2, the trainee will have a day release, on a weekly basis, to design, facilitate and evaluate simulation methodology in the teaching and training of Foundation doctors. The successful appointee will work with 2 deputy directors of simulation who work within the trust. There will also be supported additional study leave to attend simulation national conference
