Appraisal and Assessment
Appraisal describes the informal and confidential dialogue that should occur regularly between the trainee and their Educational Supervisor. It should be a supportive and formative exercise that underpins trainee development.
Assessment is the system whereby the progress of the trainee is gauged, according to the curricula and the specialty blueprints. It is a summative process, and requires documentation that should be shared with the trainee. It informs the annual review (ARCP) and incorporates workplace-based assessments (WPBAs) and knowledge-based assessments (PACES and SCEs, for example).
