Generic Skills Courses
Health Education England working across Yorkshire and the Humber has developed a range of courses for junior doctors and dentists in training as well as SASG doctors, trainers and supervisors. The aim is to provide access to generic skills as well as personal and professional development which supports and enhances good medical practice.
In addition we provide a Careers Support Service via designated Associate Postgraduate Deans.
Clinical leadership is a key element in all curricula and has been demonstrated to improve patient care.
Health Education England Yorkshire and the Humber are running a free one-day virtual course for doctors in the region. Courses will be delivered by current clinicians and educators.
The course is aimed at postgraduate doctors of the following grades: CT/ST1-4, GPST1-4
This course will be most relevant to those who have little experience of leadership training in the past. This will be an interactive, reflective day providing an understanding of clinical leadership and its role within the NHS.
For dates, more information or to book, please see Maxcourse.
Leadership & Management courses are available for postgraduate doctors at grades ST5+ and SAS doctors.

All our courses are booked via Medical Maxcourse. Please see below in regards to the common Maxcourse queries we receive.
Do I need a Maxcourse account?
You are required to have an account to be able to book any courses on the system. If you do not already have an account please select the Medical Maxcourse link, select the option 'new user? start here' and provide the requested information.
Once you have created your account you will need to ensure the below has been updated on your account, via 'account details'
- Profession- Select the one/s that apply, this will be used to confirm you are applying for courses relevant to you.
- Gender, Main Occupation, Speciality and Trust - if applicable
How do I find a course?
Once you have an account you can use the search course function to search using the title of the course or you can use the course calendar.
If the course consists of multi-day sessions?
Some of the courses we offer involve multi-day sessions. Please be aware before booking any multi-day course that you are able to attend and be granted study leave for all sessions. While we accept that unexpected emergencies can prevent you from attending a session, there is a risk if you miss one session you will not be classed as having attended the entire course. If this occurs you would need to rebook and attend the course again to gain an attendance certificate.
Will I receive a booking confirmation email?
You may not receive a booking confirmation email from Maxcourse. You can view all your course bookings via your Maxcourse account under ‘my courses’.
Will I receive a certificate?
Once the course has completed, Maxcourse will be manually updated with your attendance. You can view this via your account under ‘my courses’. If the status next to the course title is ‘unconfirmed’ this means we have not yet updated the attendance, please allow at least 5 working days for this to be actioned.
You will receive a notification from Maxcourse when your certificate is ready to view. This notification will ask you to provide feedback for the course before the certificate is made available for you.
Error when booking?
If there is an error whilst you try to book, Maxcourse will provide an explanation of the error and how you can fix it, usually by selecting ‘edit’
The most common error when booking is that the ‘profession’ set on your account does not match the ‘target audience’ listed on the course. The two must match for the booking to be successful.
The course is fully booked, is there a waiting list?
You can add yourself to the waiting list via Maxcourse. Find the course you wish to book, if it is full it will have a ‘waiting list’ option rather than a ‘book’ option. Select waiting list and then head to your basket to complete the waiting list booking.
All waiting list bookings will also show on your account under ‘my courses’.
All those on the waiting list are notified if a cancellation is received and the place is filled on a first come first served basis.
I'm unable to log into my account
There may be a few reasons why you may not be able to log into your account, please consider the below prior to contacting the team;
- Are you accessing the correct site. There are multiple Maxcourse sites and each require their own log in details, If you know you have an account but your details are not being accepted, it might mean you are on the incorrect site.
- The User ID will be your email address. Consider whether you had created your account using an alternative email address
